In a new record of sorts, a 98-year old Indian was recently given the Master’s degree in Economics.
Raj Kumar Vaishya, a proud graduate from Patna’s Nalanda Open University was awarded the esteemed certification from none other than Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik.
The now frail yet enthusiastic 98-year old man was ferried up to the stage on his wheelchair and received the award with great enthusiasm. Raj Kumar is ecstatic that he could clear the exams at this age. It was his long unfulfilled dream to get the Master’s degree, no matter what.
By doing so Raj Kumar has proved to be an inspiration for many who wish to realize their dreams regardless of the circumstances or obstacles. While speaking to the media, Raj Kumar was quoted as saying, ‘”I want to tell them not to get upset and depressed. ‘Mauka aur avsar har wakt rehta hai, kewal khud pe vishwas hona chahiye’ (There will always be opportunities for those who believe in themselves).’
At this age, it was indeed difficult for Kumar to lead the life of a college student and follow the same routine. He used to find it difficult to sit upright or walk after her fractured his back a few months back. Despite of his physical ailments, Raj Kumar pursued his goal with a steady zeal.
His long-awaited dream of pursuing a degree in economics has also ensured that his name is now recorded in the Limca Book of Records. Certainly, Raj Kumar Vaishya is an inspiration for students across the world who crib about each and everything when it comes to studies.
