They drive fast, but without breaking any traffic norms. They assume on their feet, and are more often than not responsible for saving a life. Ambulance drivers are often known to play the Good Samaritan.
Driver Thamim saved an infant’s life by driving 516km in just 7 hours. On Wednesday night, with the life of a month-old baby hanging in balance, Thamim raced across nearly the entire length of the coastal state, covering a distance of 516 kilometres between the northern city of Kannur and Kerala’s capital, Thiruvananthapuram. Thamim was well that he had a task to accomplish and failure was not an option at any cost. Fathima Labia, a one-month-old infant, needed to undergo an emergency heart surgery. The doctors in Kannur advised her parents to take her to SRI Chithra Mission hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.
At this point in time taking Fathima by airways was the only option but the nearest airports – Mangalore or Calicut – were at least 5 hours away by road. It was then decided to take Fathima by road. The hospital management of Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram, Thamim and state police joined hands in this mission. A 516-km green corridor for a smooth and obstacle-free driving of the ambulance by the Kerala Police. Thamim’s ambulance was accompanied by at least two SUVs of the Kerala Police to make sure that Thamim didn’t have to slow down at any point.
Thamim drove continuously at speeds hovering around 100-120km per hour and around 3.22 am on Thursday the ambulance was outside the casualty ward of the hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. A journey which normally takes 14 hours was covered in just 7 hours. His efforts saved an infant’s life and that became possible with the coordination of the state authorities. Ambulance drivers are actually a ‘life-savers’.
