BSF – Border Security Force was born in the year 1965 after a war broke out with Pakistan. It was then realised that the western frontier needed to be safeguarded better to prevent any further misadventures by our blatant neighbour. Hence, a special force was tasked with defending India’s land borders which were born on December 1, 1965. Let’s have a look at some of the interesting facts about the brave force of India.

Sea, Air and Land: The Border Security Force also has the unique sensitivity of operating on land, air and the sea. The land force is outfitted with ordnance and uses camels to move in desert terrain. In the nallas of Kutch, the force uses Fast Attack Crafts to catch the burglar and also operates helicopters and fixed wing aircrafts like Embraer and HS 748.

Women First: While most forces engage women soldiers, the BSF was the first to expand them in fighting roles. The ‘Mahila Parahiri’ performs the similar tasks as their male colleagues and participate in night patrols along the border.

The world’s biggest border guarding force: It is made up of more than 2.5 lakh soldiers and that makes it world’s biggest border guarding force. The force is assigned with guarding thousands of kilometres of India’s land border. Approximately 3,000 km long border with Pakistan and 4,000 km long border sharing with Bangladesh are guarded 24×7 by the BSF force.

Peacekeepers: The force has also been assigned to counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir in addition to the authority of guarding the border. The BSF saw success in anti-terrorism operations and was influential in bringing down militancy in the state.
