Hookah Parlors are the latest buzz in town. Teenagers love to spend their parent’s hard-earned money on these intoxicating parlors every weekend. Hookah parlors are immensely popular in Metropolitan cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Delhi.

All that is expected to change now if a new ban on hookah parlors comes in to effect the coming Year. Mumbai’s new Mayor – Vishwanath – wants to crack the whip on the ever-increasing menace of Hookah Parlors.

Vishwanath has now submitted a written letter to the Police Commissioner D.D Padsalgikar seeking a ban on hookah parlors across the city. The contents of the letter reveal that hookah parlors encourage underage smoking and consumption of intoxicating products among the youth.

Consumption of intoxicating substances compel a person to lose self-control thus leading to grave law and order issues such as assault and murder. To prove his point, he cited the recent murder that took place in a hookah parlor in Goregaon.

Moreover, most of these hookah parlors are situated close to educational institutions such as schools & colleges. Mayor Padsalgikar while speaking to the media was quoted as saying, ‘it is extremely important for authorities to enforce a ban on hookah parlours to protect the younger generation.’

Currently the hookah parlors which are operational are supposed to adhere to the laws set by the Bombay Police Act, The Municipal Corporation Act and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act.

However, most of these hookah parlours flout these laws as minor are always seen smoking out of the hookah pipes. We agree that stringent laws are essential rather than a blanket ban on hookah parlors to ensure minors are kept away from such places.
