Environmental problems in Delhi, are a threat to the well-being of residents as well as the flora & fauna. Delhi is the 6th-most populated metropolis in the world & one of the most heavily polluted cities in India. Delhi has one of the country’s highest volumes of particulate matter pollution.

Air quality index of Delhi is generally Moderate level between Jan to September and it drastically deteriorates to Very Poor Severe or even Hazardous levels in 3 months between October to December, due to various factors including stubble burning, fireworks and cold weather. In May 2014, WHO announced New Delhi as the most polluted city in the world.

Air pollution in Delhi is caused mainly by industry and vehicles. As many as 10,000 people a year may die prematurely in Delhi as a result of air pollution. According to one study, Delhi citizens would live on average an extra nine years if Delhi met WHO air quality standards.

Opposition is politicizing the matter and blowing things out of proportion. The Chief Minister looks lost and clueless about how to tackle this menace and find a long-term solution. Meanwhile the residents of Delhi are suffering and are at a great risk.

This is an alarming sign of what happens when we ignore the environmental laws and act irresponsibly. We must start conserving nature and protect the environment to avoid a tragedy like this anywhere else in the world. Let this serve as a wake-up call for all cities to protect our future generations.
