In India, whenever one is filling up a form, amongst several personal details, questions about your marital status seem quite common. But how would you react if someone asked you to fill a form with a question about your virginity? That’s just downright bizarre, right? Taking absurdity to new heights is Patna’s Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences’ martial declaration form. There’s a question on it, which asks future employees to declare their virginity status.

The management of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), a reputed medical college and hospital in the Bihar capital established in 1983, found itself in a fix after the questionnaire became public on Wednesday. The employees of the Institute, who were asked to fill out the questionnaire as part of their “marital declaration”, were shocked by the bizarre questions. Many of them termed the questions as “outrageous” and “sexist”.

The printed form supplied to IGIMS employees asked them to declare, that “I am bachelor/ widower/ virgin;” that “I am married and have only one wife living;” that “I am married to a person who has no other wife living;” that “I am married and have more than one wife;” and that “I am married to a person who has another wife living”.

On Wednesday the health minister of Bihar Mangal Pandey was caught off guard when reporters asked him about the same. He said that it was the zodiac sign of the employee that had to be mentioned and there was nothing more to it. The authorities say that in Hindi an unmarried girl is referred to as ‘kunwari kanya.’ This was translated as virgin. It should have been unmarried, the authorities also said.

This is hands-down taking our daily intake of quota of bizarre to brimming levels. But we still don’t get it, how someone’s virginity status can be linked to their job, even in the field of medical science?
