The Monsoon session of Parliament has been washed away with disruption and adjournment. With the opposition adamant on demanding the resignation of Sushma Swaraj and Shivraj Singh Chauhan over Lalit Gate and Vyapam scam, not letting any fruitful discussions to happen in the Parliament.

Union tourism minister Mahesh Sharma recently said that the government was planning to introduce ‘no-work-no-pay’ formula for parliamentarians. He said that salaries would be stopped if Parliament doesn’t function because of disruption. He said,

Just like no-work-no-pay formula is applied for bureaucrats, the government is mulling the option of stopping salaries if Parliament transacts no business because of disruption.

He went on to add that the government is planning this and senior ministers are in touch with the opposition to reach a consensus and said,

There is a planning for it. Our government is trying and our senior ministers are in touch with the opposition. There is an effort to reach a consensus before the tough action is taken.

Government has been making all possible efforts to end the two-week-long deadlock in Parliament with an all-party meeting again scheduled for tomorrow. The Speaker Sumitra Mahajan had also convened an all-party meeting to end the deadlock, but to no avail.

Both Houses of Parliament have barely functioned in the Monsoon session with the opposition demanding the resignations of external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje and Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan over Lalitgate and Vyapam scam. Several key bills such as GST still remain pending.

The speaker today suspended 27 Congress MPs from the Lok Sabha for five days for causing “grave disorder” and said that this was a warning for all causing disruption. In a situation like this ‘No work no pay’ might seem as the government’s only option to make the parliament function.
