Yes, that’s true. India’s defence budget is among the Top 5 in the world. India has in fact exceeded UK when it comes to spending on defence. The details have been published by a London based global think-tank.
This has certainly brought forth a shift in the defence spending between the two countries. In 2017, India spent around $52.5 billion on defence. This is way up compared to the year 2016 when India spent around $51.1 billion.
It seems like India is on a spree to modernize their existing military capabilities. However, China is 3 times ahead when it comes to spending on their military, as compared to India. Thus, China’s defence spending grew by 25 percent whereas India’s defence spending grew by only by 2.4 percent in 2016-2017.
Since 2000, China has spent a lot on submarines, destroyers and corvettes. As per the report, China and Russia are challenging the military supremacy of the United States and allies. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia remains on the third position with an overall spending of about $76.7 billion.
It’s still unclear if India’s ramped up defence budget has anything to do with the recent Doklam standoff with China.
