A visit to a torrent website could land you behind bars for 3 years with an additional penalty of INR 3 lakhs. A web search for a torrent file, a download from a host banned in India and even viewing an image on a file host like ImageBam is covered under the ban proposed by the Indian government.
On visiting a URL of a host site which is banned in India, a warning pops up on up on your screen:
“This URL has been blocked under the instructions of the Competent Government Authority or in compliance with the orders of a Court of competent jurisdiction. Viewing, downloading, exhibiting or duplicating an illicit copy of the contents under this URL is punishable as an offence under the laws of India, including but not limited to under Sections 63, 63-A, 65 and 65-A of the Copyright Act, 1957 which prescribe imprisonment for 3 years and also fine of upto Rs 3,00,000/-.
If one faces such a blocking of this URL, one can drop a mail at email@example.com who will furnish details of relevant proceedings under which one can approach the relevant High Court or Authority for redressal of grievance, the under 48 hours.
