Well, going by Sabyasachi’s recent lecture delivered at Harvard University that seems to be the case.
Mr. Sabyasachi is one of India’s most respected fashion designers who is known for his beautiful designs worldwide. He is also a favorite among Bollywood’s topmost celebrities.
While speaking to the students at Harvard, Sabyasachi criticized the women of his own country for not wearing the saree and giving preference to western outfits over India’s saree.
Mr. Sabyasachi was quoted as saying, “I think, if you tell me that you do not know how to wear a saree, I would say shame on you. It’s a part of your culture, (you) need stand up for it.’
Strangely, his remarks were received with lots of laughter and a thunderous applause by the audience. He went on to further state that the saree is quite easily the most wonderful dress in the world and an identification for Indian women. He complimented Deepika Padukone for flaunting the saree at all the social dos she goes to.
He also added that the Indian garment (saree) and Indian women go hand in hand. Several wars have been fought in the saree and it is an integral part of our culture. He advised that women should go back to their roots and not have pre-conceived notions about the saree.
He maintained that cultural clothing should also remain within the confines of a particular country or it becomes a costume.
