Just days after writing a post on inequality, 27-year-old Dalit MPhil student at JNU Muthu Krishnan was found having allegedly committed suicide in South Delhi’s Munirka area Monday evening. “He had come to his friend’s house this afternoon to have food. He said he wanted to sleep and went inside the room where he locked himself in. later his friends called him and on getting no response, called police,” said ADCP (South) Chinmoy Biswas. The police said they have not found any suicide note so far.

Muthu, who was known to friends on Facebook as Krish Rajini, was from Salem, Tamil Nadu. He was a student at the University of Hyderabad when fellow Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula committed suicide in January 2016 and had blogged about meeting Rohith and his mother, Radhika. Muthu belonged to a very poor family. His father Jeevanantham is employed as a watchman in a private concern and his mother is daily wage labourer. Muthu has an elder sister and two younger sisters.

Expressing shock over the incident, a member of the Joint Action Committee for Social Justice recalled how Muthukrishnan was an active student in all Dalit movements. An inconsolable father of Muthu said Muthukrishnan had always been very bold and took part in various agitations while doing his M.Phil in Hyderabad. Police said no suicide note had been found and that it hadn’t been found that the alleged suicide was owing to any issues at the university. He is said to have been depressed for some time over some personal issues, police said.

As the news broke, Muthukrishnan’s Facebook profile was flooded with messages from students across universities. “When equality is denied everything is denied. There is no equality in M.phil/phd Admission, there is no equality in viva-voce, there is only denial of equality, denying Prof. Sukhadeo thorat recommendations, denying students protest places in Ad-block, denying the education of the marginal,” read Muthukrishnan’s last post on Facebook.

Voicing suspicion over the alleged suicide by his son, Mr. Jeevanantham said he Muthu was not coward to end his life in such a manner. He demanded a proper enquiry to bring the true facts to light.
