A target for the moon, they say, and even if you miss, you will be surely landing in stars. The inspiring journey of Prathamesh Hirve’s journey has led him to both. A 25-year-old engineer from a slum in Mumbai who resides in a humble 10 x 10 ft home at Filterpada slums in Powai. Even though, the walls of this humble home did not restrict his dreams. Hirve is set to become the first ISRO engineer from Mumbai.

He has a diploma in Electrical Engineering from Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic College in Mumbai. After he completed his internship at L&T and Tata Powers, Hirve decided to pursue a degree in the same field from Smt Indira Gandhi College of Engineering in Navi Mumbai. Hirve was preparing for something great, so much great in fact that his family would have never thought of!

As every success stories as hurdles at initial stage Hirve’s journey to have. To achieve his dreams, a career counsellor had advised him to pursue Arts instead of Engineering. He was slightly disheartened by this advice but it could not break him. He was upset but refused to give up. He told his parents that he will become an engineer and his parents believed him that their son will achieve his dreams for sure.

Focusing on engineering studies when you live in a densely populated slum comes with its own share of distractions. Hirve’s diploma course had set another challenge for him. Hirve had studied all subjects in Marathi till class 10th. And suddenly he was exposed to complex engineering terms and definitions in English. But, Hirve did not bend.

Hirve was selected out of 16,000 applicants, nine got selected. Yes of course, Hirve was one of them! Many of his loved ones were unaware of the organisation until he got a job in ISRO. He will be an electrical scientist at ISRO, the first-ever recruit from the city of dreams- Mumbai. Hirve is certainly an inspiration for hard work, conviction and uncompromised efforts towards your goals.
