Neeraj Ghaywan’s directorial debut Masaan has left his Bollywood colleagues spellbound. The film received two awards at the Cannes film festival and is said to have received a five-minute standing ovation at the premier film festival almost two months back. The film has made its way to Indian screens on July 24.

Masaan has got an overwhelmingly positive response from the B-Town and most of the celebrities took to micro-blogging site Twitter to shower praises on the film. While Radhika Apte called it a “beautifully crafted” film, actor Aditi Rao Hydari declared Ghaywan a “genius“.

Veteran poet and lyriscist Javed Akhtar was completely taken over by the film he said, “When I came to see the film, I knew I was going to watch a very good film. But in spite of that, I’m totally taken aback and over-awed. It is one of the finest films Hindi cinema has made. It is perfect. The performance, direction, camera work, acting, writing were all unbelievable. It’s a very good film from any standard in the world,”

Shabana Azmi was equally impressed with the emotional drama. “‘Masaan’ is truly a coming-of-age of Hindi cinema. The writing, direction, photography and the ensemble acting is superlative. And I’m really proud that we’re in the times when a film like ‘Masaan’ is made, all the best to everybody. It’s a must-watch,”

Ayushmann Khurrana tweetes, “Loved Masaan! Class act by RichaChadha & Sanjay Misra. Vicky K & Shweta T are such amazing finds. Hail Ghaywan & Guneet Monga.”

The film is produced by Drishyam Films, Phantom Films, Macassar Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, “Masaan” stars Sanjay Mishra and Richa Chadha in the lead along with newcomers Shweta Tripathi and Vicky Kaushal. The film’s story revolves around four lives which intersect along the Ganga river: a low-caste boy falling hopelessly in love, a daughter ridden with guilt of a sexual encounter ending in a tragedy, a hapless father with fading morality, and a spirited child yearning for a family, long to escape the moral constructs of a small town.
