A new superhero is in town. This time though, an Indian Superhero! The name Arunachalam Muruganantham is not renowned, as yet. However, his story is now all set to be presented on the big screen thanks to Khiladi –
Akshay Kumar.

Akshay’s new film co-starring Sonam Kapoor is based on the real-life story of Arunachalam Muruganantham who led the revolution for low-cost sanitary napkins. His story also finds mention in Twinkle Khanna’s second book, The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad.

Muruganantham’s story has been covered by leading media outlets, both national and international. He has also delivered a lecture in the renowned Ted Talks and also shared the dais with philanthropist Bill Gates at one public event.

Known as India’s Menstrual Man or Sanitary Man, Arunachalam Muruganantham belongs to a small town rural area of India. He observed his wife’s discomfort due to cloth-made sanitary napkins, which were not only uncomfortable, but also unhygienic.

To understand his wife’s challenges, he kept hidden a small bottle in his underwear filled with a red-coloured liquid, wrapped with a plain cloth. He soon observed that the experience was messy and made him feel uncomfortable throughout the day.

Slowly, he started experimenting with different materials of cloth to make the best sanitary napkin for his wife without spending much.

Muruganantham, during his experiments, was ridiculed by his neighbours and villagers. His own wife decided to leave him. However, he decided to continue with his efforts ignoring the ridicule and remarks. Finally, after two years he achieved breakthrough and manufactured the best-quality low-cost sanitary napkins.

Today, Muruganantham’s sanitary napkin-making machines are sold throughout India and are also being procured by International firms. In 2014, Muruganantham was featured in Times Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people in the world!

Indeed, people like Muruganantham are an inspiration for budding entrepreneurs who wish to do something good for the society.

We do hope Twinkle Khanna and Akshay Kumar do justice to Padman’s story!
