Amid clamour over a range of issues in Parliament, Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agrawal raised the issue of salary hike for Members of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Agrawal said that their salary is less than what their secretaries get. It must be recalled that the issue of salary hike for Members of Parliament was ranked even in November last year when the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament had made a recommendation to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Noteworthy, the salaries and the allowances of the members are governed by the Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954. Each member of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha is entitled to receive a salary of Rs 50,000 per month. Apart from this, the MPs also get a daily allowance of Rs 2,000 per day for each day of residence on duty. It is paid only when a member sign the register maintained for the purpose. There is also a Rs 45,000 constituency allowance which is given per month.

The MPs also get Rs 45,000 per month as the office expense allowance. Out of the total amount, Rs 15,000 are for meeting the expenses on stationery items and postage, Rs 30,000 is paid by the Lok Sabha/Rajya Sabha Secretariat to the person(s). Raising the issue in the Upper House, Agrawal said after the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission, wages of MPs was less than their own secretaries.

Last year too, SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav had raised the demand for early implementation of the recommendations of a Parliamentary Committee headed by Yogi Adityanath on wages and allowances of MPs. But, what is to be noted here is that Parliamentarians are entitled to major allowances and benefits that more or less compensate for their low basic pay.
