It is that time of the year when the Ganesh Chathurthi festivities grip the entire country with its fervour. The state of Maharashtra famed for its pandals displaying large and beautiful idols 11 day celebrations witnesses devotees preparing to welcome their beloved Bappa in full swing.

As a ritual of the festival, an idol of the elephant headed God is installed at homes and in local pandals and worshipped from a period of 1, 3 5, 7 or 10 days and is immersed on the last day. Ganesh idols were traditionally made of  clay and mud gotten from the river banks, known as shaalu maati, so that when immersed on the final day it could be returned to its source, symbolising nature’s cycle of life and death and also causing least environmental impact. Over time, idol makers switched to Plaster of Paris, which although is easier to mould and cheaper to buy, has cost a great deal of environmental damage. These idols are decorated with paints containing mercury and cadmium which are harmful to the environment On the day of the immersion, processions throng local rivers, lakes and water bodies to immerse idols from pandals, which contaminates the aquatic ecosystems. The constant competition between pandals to install larger and more ornate idols at their pandals has worsened the issue.

Citizens are more aware of the environmental dangers and are reverting to more eco-friendly alternatives. A 40% decline in the manufacture of PoP has been observed. Even the Maharashtra state government can has taken measures like the banning of export of PoP from the Konkan areas which is a result of 100% increase in demand for clay idols. Various workshops have also been conducted to teach individuals how to make eco-friendly idols. For those who have not had the time to attend such workshops, TFI has put together a list of places where one can buy the eco-friendly idols from.
