No, we don’t think so!

Taking the recent Election results in to consideration, it doesn’t seem like the ‘Vikas’ Model has failed at all. In fact, BJP’s euphoric victory for the straight sixth consecutive time without battling an eye -lid.

However, this time around Congress sympathizers and so-called Poll experts predicted a Congress revival in Modiji’s home state. With firm confidence and a renewed zeal, the then Vice President of Congress – Rahul Gandhi began his campaigning like never. He sounded the poll bugle by appeasing the Patidars via the Patidar chief – Hardik Patel. He played the oldest card in the deck, the card of casteism and caste-based politics. By signing the peace accord, he tried to woo the Patidar community (which constitutes 14% of the overall Gujarat Population) by offering them ‘Reservation.’

He also tried to attack the age-old notion of ‘Gujarat Model’ by criticizing Modiji’s ‘Vikas’ plank. Via careful planning and though-out social media strategy, Rahul Gandhi promoted the now popular term – Vikas Gando Thayo Che. The phrase went viral within minutes and spread like wildfire. Memes turned into speeches and speeches snowballed in to a major momentum which threatened to overthrow Modi from his own fortress, Gujarat.

However, similar to South Africa in a major World Cup tournament, Congress committed hara-kiri as always! Thanks to the famed ‘Aloo Sona, Sona Aloo’ speech combined with Mani Shankar Aiyer’s Neech Aadmi remarks; Congress had to go scurrying back to the drawing board to save face during the campaign. Similarly, Yuva-Congress’s ill-timed ChaiWala Meme did much damage to the Congress hopes.

Moreover, people saw through Rahul’s strategy of temple-hopping and were smart enough not to fall prey to the old strategy of ‘Divide and Rule.’ In the meanwhile, Modiji and Team kept answering to Congress’ accusations, which worked greatly in their favour. Modiji’s penultimate speech in Gujarati on the ‘Chai-Wala’ remark worked wonders for the BJP.

BJP’s textbook approach towards the Gujarat Elections can be a lesson for anyone wanting to pursue a career in politics. While BJP celebrates their two big-victories, Congress will be sent back to the drawing board to contemplate and strategize once more for the upcoming 2019 elections.
