Speaking in the legislative assembly, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the state will seek the death penalty for the Malvani Hooch case. He appreciated the efforts of Maharashtra Police in nabbing the accused and the overall decline in crime rate since the BJP-Sena government has taken over.

104 people had lost their lives in the Malwani hooch tragedy, Crime Branch officials have managed to trace the source of the methanol that was mixed in the killer brew to tankers in Gujarat, from where it was stolen by 50-year-old Subhash Giri. Acting on a tip-off, Crime Branch officials arrested 50-year-old Subhash Giri from Vadodara, whose gang used to steal methanol from tankers in Gujarat by keeping the drivers distracted; he then sold the chemical at a low cost to a middleman, who supplied it to hooch dealers in Malwani and other places in Mumbai.

The Chief Minister said,

The Malvani case (where over 100 people died after consuming illicit liquor) was a tragic incident. We have charged the accused under section 302 of IPC (murder). Police took immediate action and arrested the accused from Gujarat. We are going to recommend to the court that the accused be hanged.

The CM informed the House that the state had taken 1,177 awareness programmes on hooch, conducted 203 raids, 256 mohalla committee meetings and 702 meetings with women groups.

Issues like dysfunctional scanners at Dahisar check will be resolved after talking to the BMC.

He further stated that the state government will be appointing a special court for daily hearing in the Malvani hooch tragedy case.

Speaking on law and order the Chief Minister Fadnavis also appreciated the way the execution of 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon was carried out and peace was maintained.
