In a remarkable turn of fortunes in Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party is set to return to power after 14 years as it is has swept the state by winning over 300 seats. This is the party’s best performance so far in the state, considering that this was only second time it won with a clear majority. The last time it crossed the 2/3rd mark was in 1991, at the height of Ram Janam Bhoomi movement, when it won 221 seats.
Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself led the election campaign for BJP in UP where it has made a huge sweep, the victory belongs to him. He has emerged as the tallest leader in the country whose popularity has not waned but increased even three years after winning the Lok Sabha elections in 2014.
After the UP Assembly poll results, many have started saying that PM Modi’s win in the next Lok Sabha elections is certain now. Nothing can stop PM Modi given the drubbing regional parties and the Congress have received in the UP elections which were already being called semi-final for the next Lok Sabha elections. The poor show by the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in UP can be interpreted as PM Modi’s successful strike at the existing vote banks of the regional parties, something he was unable to accomplish in Bihar Assembly elections in 2015 where a grand alliance of JD(U), RJD and the Congress rode to victory on traditional caste and religious equations.
The victory will help the BJP to have a man or woman of its choice as the president and vice-president of the country, as President Pranab Mukherjee’s term expires in third week of July and vice-president Hamid Ansari’s term expires in August. In the Vajpayee era, it had managed to get Bhairon Singh Shekhawat elected as the vice-president but this will be the first time that the party will have a candidate of its choice as the next president of the country.
The BJP’s massive victory in Uttar Pradesh owes itself to a combination of factors, the first and foremost being prime minister Modi’s hold over the electorate, his ability to carry and inspire hope amongst the electorate, and the formidable social combination that the BJP has managed to put in place in UP. Its victory is also a big thumbs up to its strategy of building a formidable caste combination of upper castes, non-Yadav OBCs, MBCs, and the non Jatav Valmiki’s amongst the Jatavs.
The results suggest that the 2019 general elections, BJP is on solid ground leading up to the next elections. While the BJP is steadily increasing its footprint, it is also establishing itself as the country’s preeminent pan-India party.
