Mumbai is considered one of the most developed metropolitan cities in the world. Hence, it comes as a surprise when India’s financial capital has witnessed a barrage of dengue cases in the past 5 years.

As per updated records, Mumbai-Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations collectively recorded around 58 percent of Dengue cases. These records are as per the latest report from the State-Health Department.

Out of this percentage, Mumbai witnessed a staggering percentage of cases. Not only this, Mumbai also witnessed maximum number of deaths in the past 5-years. Out of this staggering percentage, around 17 people lost their lives because of dengue, this year. 12 people lost their lives in the month of September 2017 alone.

Mumbai witnessed around 913 Dengue cases in all, which is quite huge because Mumbai is one of India’s most developed cities.

As per M S Diggikar, Joint Director (vector-borne diseases), state health department, however, the number of Dengue reported cases have gone down gradually over the past few years. Moreover, he also claimed that the number of deaths because of Dengue have also reduced considerably this year.

Most of the dengue cases were reported from Maharashtra’s urban areas. As per the official medical records over 1000 cases were reported in rural areas of Maharashtra.

The sorry state of figures highlights the poor state-preparedness regarding such fatal and severe diseases. It is to be seen if the State Government implements stringent measures to curb the rising menace of dengue and dengue related deaths.
